Stormwater Management

Water quality in the Peel-Harvey Estuary is affected by pollution and nutrients that reach it through our stormwater systems. Traditional stormwater systems feature drains, concrete pipes and discharge points to waterways. They were built for maximum collection and conveyance of stormwater. This past practise has many implications for our waterways and has lead to poor water quality, algal blooms, scumming and fish kills.

The City of Mandurah has adopted a stormwater management plan to help improve water quality in the catchment. The plan focuses on the retrofitting of traditional stormwater systems to current best management practises. This includes the decommissioning of sumps, installation of gross pollutant traps, stormwater harvesting and the implementation of water sensitive urban design. The objectives of the stormwater management plan are:

  • Protection of property from flooding
  • Improvement of water quality throughout the catchment
  • Removal of stormwater outlets into Mandurah waterways
  • Retrofitting of traditional stormwater systems such as fenced sumps
  • Retention and restoration of bushland and buffer zones around wetlands
  • Increasing amenity of the urban form and public open space
  • Promotion of sustainable practices in the community

Water Sensitive Urban Design

Water sensitive urban design applies features of design into drainage and stormwater management to improve the management of the urban water cycle. It is a holistic approach that aims to improve water quality and minimise run off through protection from flooding, retention and restoration of the natural drainage system and through the reduction of pollutant discharge. Water sensitive urban design encourages water efficiency and in particular the reuse of water harvested in urban areas.

On site infiltration of stormwater, stormwater treatment measures and stormwater harvesting is encouraged to increase water efficiency and improve water quality.

Water sensitive urban design principles are now recognised as best management practice for stormwater management and have been widely adopted by local governments in the Peel-Harvey catchment. The City of Mandurah has joined other local governments in the region in adopting a water Sensitive Urban Design Local Planning Policy to ensure new development is consistent with the principles of water sensitive urban design.
