MANDURAH has been chosen as the Australian host of the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation World Cup for the next four years, boosting the City's reputation as a top tourism destination and as one of the world's most liveable cities.

From March 16 to 18, 2012, the Action Sports Games Mandurah WA will run in tandem with the Channel Seven Mandurah Crab Fest and incorporate the IWWF World Cup and freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding.

Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said the choice of Mandurah as the venue marked a number of firsts for the City.

“This is the first time an IWWF World Cup has taken place in Australia and the first time it will be held in the same place for four consecutive years,” she said.

“It's incredibly exciting news for Mandurah with the games bringing a major boost to our local economy while giving us all a chance to experience spectacular world-class action sports on our doorstep.

“When you add our own Channel Seven Mandurah Crab Fest, now approaching its 14th year and attracting about 100,000 visitors, we've got an absolute tourism bonanza.

“It's a fantastic opportunity to show off our wonderful City to regular Crab Fest visitors and the additional 2000-plus competitors, judges and spectators from around the globe who will converge on Mandurah for the world cup.”

IWWF International President Kuno Ritschard added: “With more than 30 million active participants in our sport, we are absolutely delighted to have such a perfect stage in Mandurah to introduce our very best athletes to this superb location.”

Mayor Creevey will officially launch the Action Sports Games Mandurah WA on January 24 when further details will be announced.

The State Government has provided funding for the Mandurah Action Sports Games over the next four years through the Regional Events Program, funded by Royalties for Regions and run by Eventscorp.

The IWWF World Cup has previously been held in China, Malaysia, Russia, Egypt, Qatar, South Korea, Singapore, France and Ireland.

Among the 128 national and international competitors expected in Mandurah are five-times world champion waterski jumper Freddy Krueger from the US and world number one wakeboarder Harley Clifford.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls and Tourism Minister Kim Hames announced the State Government’s support of the Action Sports Games Mandurah WA, as part of Eventscorp’s 2012 calendar launch in Fremantle.

It was one of two major announcements – the other was a new major golf tournament for Perth.
