National Broadband Network
Mandurah is one of 19 locations across Australia that will receive the Australian Government’s National Broadband Network roll-out commencing in late 2011. Mandurah is one of three Western Australian sites to receive the second-release roll-out, along with Geraldton and Victoria Park.
The National Broadband Network provider, NBN Co Limited, was established by the Australian Government in 2009 to design, build and operate the NBN. In June 2010, NBN Co and Telstra announced that they had entered into an agreement on the roll-out of the NBN, paving the way for a faster, cheaper, more efficient roll-out of the National Broadband Network.
NBN Co will design, build and operate an open-access superfast broadband network that will provide fibre-based services to 90 per cent of Australian premises, supplying speeds of 100 Megabits per second.
The fibre-optic rollout will achieve connection speeds between 50 and 100 times faster than currently available. The remaining 10 per cent of premises will be connected with next-generation wireless and satellite technologies, depending on location and geography, and will provide speeds of 12 Megabits per second.
Under the National Broadband Network program, about 3000 Mandurah dwellings will have access to the superfast broadband network with connection speeds between 50 and 100 times faster than currently available. This will allow Mandurah to set the benchmark in terms of Australian internet speeds.
The NBN roll-out supports the City of Mandurah’s strategic objective of driving local and regional economic growth via a digital-based economy. This will also benefit members of our community with mobility difficulties to be able access services, information and remain connected.
