Coastal Awards for Excellence - 2005 - City of Mandurah Nominations

The Western Australian Coastal Awards for Excellence are presented to community groups, individuals, organizations and local government agencies who have made and outstanding contribution to the protection and management of WA’s special coastal and marine environment. The City has assisted the Bouvard Coastcare Group in nominating in the following categories for the 2005 Coastal Awards for Excellence:

Category 1.  Coastal Leadership - Outstanding Individual Achievement - Malcolm Flett

Malcolm Flett has been nominated for an ‘Outstanding Individual Achievement in Coastal Leadership’ in recognition of his 12 years of dedication to coastcare in the Bouvard area.  Twelve years ago, Malcolm sought interested members of the community to join him as founding members of the first coastcare group in Mandurah.  More than a decade on, under Malcolm’s guidance and support, the Bouvard Coastcare Group is still energetic in coastcare activities.  Bouvard is the only Mandurah Coastcare group to achieve continuous membership and activities over this period of time.

Malcolm efforts have previously been recognised by the City of Mandurah for his dedication and effort.

Congratulations to Malcolm Flett he has won the “Outstanding Individual Achievement in Coastal Leadership’ at the State Coastal Conference dinner on November 17, 2005. His efforts have been rewarded by receiving a glass sculptured award.

Category 2. Outstanding Community Group Effort - Bouvard Coastcare Group

Over the past 12 years the Bouvard Coastcare group has inspired countless individuals to be involved in coastcare.  The Group, in partnership with the City of Mandurah, has effectively achieved hundreds of thousands of dollars in Federal and State grants and the sponsorship of community organisations such as Rotary and businesses such as Alcoa.

Group members contribute free-of-charge labour, the use of the personal 4WD vehicles, computers and radio equipment (the City has recently funded a 4WD vehicle for the use of all Coastcare groups, housed with the Bouvard Group).

Since mid 2001, the Group has contributed 2,300 man-hours of work, more than 10,000 kilometres of travel and laid 2,600 cubic metres of brush on eroded dunes. The spirit of the group is such that in the 10 years it has been formed, more than $2,500 worth of travel costs have been accured.  The volunteers have not claimed any expenses, absorbing all the petrol and travel costs as part of their contribution to caring for Mandurah’s magnificent coastline.

In undertaking its objectives, the Group has also involved school and Scout groups, CALM and four wheel drive (4WD) clubs and other community groups to help achieve its practical goals and educate the wider community of the significance of a healthy coastal environment.

Winners will be announced at a presentation at the State Coastal Conference dinner on November 17, 2005.

Congratulations to the Bouvard Coastcare Group they have won the ‘Outstanding Community Group Effort’ award at the State Coastal Conference dinner on November 17, 2005. The group has taken home a prestigious glass sculptured award.
