Responsible Cat Ownership

There is no State Law in relation to the control of cats in Western Australia.  However the City of Mandurah encourages responsible cat ownership. There are a number of practical ways that you can contribute to being a responsible cat owner. These include:

  • Keep your cat confined to your property, particularly at night when most hunting and nuisance occurs. Cats roaming are subject to an increased risk of injury and physical attack by both dogs and cats.
  • Cats can be turned into content indoor pets by installing a cat enclosure in you yard. See our attached links.
  • Be mindful of your neighbour’s rights. Not all neighbours enjoy cats roaming on their property. It’s a good idea to ask your neighbours if your cat is an annoyance.
  • Sterilise your cat in order to reduce unwanted pregnancies and territorial fighting habits. Desexing should be performed at between 3 and 6 months of age.
  • Vaccinate your cat to avoid potential disease and sickness.
  • Make sure your cat wears a collar with bells or a small mirror and identification. The bells or mirror act as an alarm for potential prey. A new product on the market called CatBibs has proven to stop 81% of cats catching birds. See our attached link.
  • If you lose your cat, check with your neighbours, notify surrounding vets and keep in touch with the Rangers as it may have been reported as found.
  • Micro chipping is a great idea. If your cat is taken to a vet or animal refuge they can be checked for a microchip and can then be reunited with you.

REASONS TO STERILISE

  • Last year over 15,000 unwanted cats and kittens were destroyed in Perth alone
  • 40% of cat owners deliberately have a first litter, which is the main source of supply to cat overpopulation
  • Sterilised cats are healthier, live longer and are less of an annoyance to the community
  • Sterilisation is not cruel – killing kittens is. Death from birth complications are common as well as mistreatment of unwanted kittens
