Food Hygiene
The City of Mandurah have a commitment to ensure all food handlers working within it’s boundaries have the skills and knowledge to complete the tasks they are responsible for safely and ensure the public are protected.
The City is involved in a number of food handling training options that will assist workers develop the skills they require:
- Food Safety induction workshops conducted at the City of Mandurah on a monthly basis aimed to give a brief overview of food safety and the laws regulating food businesses.
- FoodSafeTM. This product, produced by the Australian Institute of Environmental Health, is a useful in-house training package with helpful tools to ensure food processes are safe and staff have reasonable knowledge levels.
- The City of Mandurah and Challenger TAFE have developed an accredited on-line or self-paced “Hygiene for Food Handlers” course. Successful completion of this program will help provide food handlers with the essential skills and knowledge needed in order to safely prepare food. The unit completed is nationally recognised and can lead into further TAFE hospitality course study. This partnership aims to achieve the common goal of producing safe food for residents and visitors to the City.
Reporting Food Concerns
If a situation arises where you suspect that a food product is substandard or food is not handled in a hygienic manner, please retain any food in question and contact an Environmental Health Officer to discuss the matter further. If you have concerns about the standard of hygiene of a food premise within the City please complete a Unsafe Food Service Request and send it to Environmental Health Services for investigation.
Starting a Food Business
Environmental Health Services assess applications for new food premises to ensure they are constructed in accordance with food safety legislation. If you are intending to purchase or open a food premises within the City of Mandurah please refer to the document 03 Guidelins for the Establishment of Food Premises for information on what licences and structural requirements apply.
Food Business - Home Occupation
Food prepared in residential kitchens is generally not permitted for sale except where the foods prepared:
- are extremely low risk foods
- for a single fund raising event organised by a community group or charitable organisation
- as part of farm-stay or home-stay accommodation.
In all cases an application must be submitted to the City's Environmental Health Services Section. The document Guidelines for Preparation of Food For Sale from Residential Premises provides application forms and information relating to food hygiene.
Temporary Food Stalls
If you are intending to have a temporary food stall for fundraising or want to set up a commercial stall at an event within the City of Mandurah you will need to make application to the City's Environmental Health Services Section. The document Temporary Food Stalls Application and Guidelines contains an application form and information on the requirements for temporary food stalls.
Food Hygiene Training and Education
The City of Mandurah produces a quarterly newsletter Food Messenger, which is distributed to all food premises in the City. Food messenger contains up to date information on food hygiene news and developments.
Environmental Health Services, in cooperation with the Department of Health and the Australian Institute of Environmental Health, work with Mandurah food premises to implement the FoodSafe, food safety program. Patrons can feel confident that premises displaying the FoodSafe certificate and stickers have undergone food handling and hygiene training and have documented procedures for cleaning, temperature monitoring and pest control. FoodSafe training is conducted free to businesses and residents of the City of Mandurah. Dates of upcoming training sessions can be found in the FoodMessenger newsletter. FoodSafe training kits for businesses can be purchased from the City for $99.00.
