Water Monitoring
Environmental Waters Monitoring
Due to the aquatic nature of the City, ocean, estuarine and canal waters are routinely monitored to ensure compliance with national water quality standards. Edible marine life such as crabs and mussels are also sampled to determine their bacteriological and chemical qualities. This information is used within the City's sustainability report card.
Potable Water Monitoring
The City's Environmental Health Services Section take samples of drinking water supplies to ensure they are safe and free from microbes (ie bacteria, viruses, protozoa etc) and chemically (nutrients, heavy metals etc). The main focus is on businesses that have on-site water supplies for public consumption, for example bed and breakfasts.
Environmental Health Officers also sample private water supplies on a cost recovery basis, $52.50 for microbial sampling and $122.50 or $142.50 for chemical water samples depending on the level of analysis.
