Environment
In 2003 the City of Mandurah took a pro-active response to the community's desire to protect bushland by releasing the "Bushland Protection Strategy". The Strategy achieves several objectives of the City's Community Charter and Strategic Plan (2001-2004) and reflects the community's expectations for biodiversity conservation by setting a goal, "To protect 150 hectares of privately owned bushland that will otherwise be developed."
In February 2003 the draft Strategy was released for a 60 day public consultation period. Over 1,400 responses revealed an overwhelming 98% support for bushland protection. Elected Members have acknowledged the community's desire and expectation that bushland be protected as an essential component of Mandurah as a sustainable community. A working group is currently preparing the final Strategy, now titled "Focus on Future Mandurah - Bushland Protection Strategy".
The draft Strategy has been a catalyst for a change in culture that aims to ensure biodiversity protection becomes one of the City's essential services to help achieve a sustainable community.
