TravelSmart, a program run by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and supported by the City of Mandurah, encourages people to use cars less and to choose alternatives such as walking, cycling, and public transport.
What can you do to be TravelSmart?
Making small changes in your travel choices can make a big difference. By simply choosing to walk, cycle, carpool or use public transport instead of driving your car for 1 or 2 trips per week, you can save time and money, boost your health and help the environment.
TravelSmart Tips
- Encourage children to walk or ride their bike to school or walk or ride with them
- Carpool to work - share petrol costs with colleagues and reduce greenhouse emissions
- Encourage the family to walk or ride to the local deli, video store, park or the beach
- Set up a car share roster with your neighbors and take it in turns to drive the kids to school
- Organise a family excursion to Perth on the bus or train
- Tele work from home 1 day each week
- Don’t drink and drive - use public transport for a night out
- Use public transport to get to work and catch up on some reading

TravelSmart Options
Walking
Walking is a great form of exercise and transport and you can do it anywhere, anytime FOR FREE. You can walk for transport, health and recreation. Walking is a great way to be active and it’s easy and low cost! An active community, with many people enjoying walking in their neighbourhood, is also a safer, friendlier and better connected community.
In November every year we enjoy Walk Week and many events around metro and regional Western Australia designed to get us out and about on foot. For more information on walking visit www.dpi.wa.gov.au/walking
Cycling
The Department of Planning and Infrastructure’s Cycling unit has all the information you could ever want, including maps outlining the best cycling for getting around Perth and the surrounding area.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance is a cycling advocacy group. Their aim is to protect and enhance the environment by advocating the increased use of bicycles for personal transport and recreation in lieu of motorised vehicles.
