Councillor Profiles

mayor paddi CREEVEY, oam

Putting Mandurah First - I seek your continued support in my second term as your Mayor.

I believe Local Government is all about community. That is why I have worked to help build our community – as a volunteer, an elected councillor and as Mayor.

My background in Social Work and community work has helped me understand the needs of our community, youth, young families and seniors. I am determined that all groups should be represented equally.

I am a passionate defender of the environment and strongly supported our Bushland Buyback Policy. I work well with industry and business and have established good links with State and Federal Government to ensure more jobs come here and we get the community and sporting facilities we need.

But a lot still needs to be done, that is why I ask for your continued support to work for Mandurah as Mayor

deputy mayor councillor darren lee (EAST WARD)

As an East Ward resident, I have lived in the district for the past 11 years. Having represented you as a councillor and the past two years as Deputy Mayor, if re-elected I will continue to be committed towards the community and ensuring that your concerns are heard in Council. The preservation and sustainability of our environment needs to be a priority in deliberations and I will continue to ensure that this viability and growth through upgrade infrastructure needs.

As an elected Councillor, the knowledge I have gained in Council - and the partnership I have formed with community/sporting groups - will be invaluable facing the many challenges that lie ahead for your city and ensuring that we continue to build a strong caring community that is compassionate about the environment and its people.

councillor lynn rodgers (east ward)

Married with three children and six grand children, I have lived in Mandurah since 1993. Since 2001 I have served as a Mandurah Councillor for the East Ward. I established a local crisis centre called WestAus Crisis & Welfare Services and established the Healthy Breakfast Club in nine local schools. I always treat everyone with respect and understanding regardless of their position in the community. I always work towards maintaining a balance between people, the environment and development and believe it is essential that all of our planning decisions reflect this. We are privileged to be caretakers of one of the most beautiful and delicate areas of coastline in Australia and it is imperative that we all work to ensure this is preserved for future generations. As a City of Mandurah Councillor, I will do all in my power to achieve these outcomes.

councillor shane jones (East Ward)

The past twenty one years, my wife Wendy and I have lived in Mandurah with three teenage children. During the last four years I have worked hard to promote Mandurah as your councillor, which has given me a greater understanding of the community’s needs and expectations. To promote road safety I introduced the successful Mandurah Car Show three years ago.

I have and will continue to look for tourism opportunities and ensure that small businesses are given a voice on council. I will provide the arts; community groups and sporting organisations a strong representation in council through deliberations. Volunteers are the backbone within the city and this promotes a healthy, vibrant community spirit.

Seniors and children in need are the most vulnerable in our society and I will ensure that their protection is given a priority. I promise to work hard, be honest and continue to listen to the community.

councillor RHYS williams (COASTAL WARD)

I am the founder and CEO of Mandurah based WA Youth Events, a non-for-profit organisation running capacity building programs for WA’s youth.

I have lived in the Coastal Ward since I was seven and I attended our local schools.

I have played an active role in advocating for young people and the community and I'm a member of numerous local boards and organisations. In 2007 and 2008, I was a finalist in the WA Youth of the Year Awards and have received several acknowledgements for my commitment to my local community.

I believe that a Council should reflect a balance of the local community. I live and work here and have watched the place change and grow. I want to advocate for the people of my area on Council, and with my passion and enthusiasm for making a difference to our community, I ask for your support

hon councillor fred riebeling, jp (Coastal Ward)

My wife Colleen and I have been married for 28 years and after working in the Pilbara for 27 years now live in Mandurah.

As a former Member for Parliament of 17 years, Speaker for 8 years and Shire President of Roebourne for 2 years, I now have the time, energy and experience to dedicate 24/7 to this wonderful community, to be here for you and to help you with council decisions. Drawing on my years of experience with State and local governments, I have the skills to ensure good, balanced decisions are made to provide better facilities and services. I will stand against high rise development and double our efforts to control the mosquitos. I’m annoyed at rate increases while house values decrease. I will ensure that every cent spent by council is scrutinised. Council contracts should go to local businesses first.

councillor don Pember (Coastal Ward)

I recognise the environmental importance of preserving the uniques bushland and waterways but at the same time provide facilities and services expected by a modern urban community. I recognise the need to create employment through promotion of small business and am concerned about a safer and more secure Mandurah. A City should have a vibrant arts culture. I believe that our youth must have a range of experiences and education opportunities.

councillor marion BLAIR (NORTH WARD)

I am a Committee Member of the Madora Bay Community Association and very keen to represent residents and ratepayers of North Ward where I live with my husband Bob. I will come in, with fresh and experienced perspective.

I was on Belmont City Council from 1987 and attained 20 years experience (eight years Deputy Mayor) in Local Government.

Awarded a Life Membership to The Australian Local Government Women’s Association, was a State Councillor, Regional Councillor and currently on the Honours Panel for the Western Australian Local Government Association.

Being on the Swan River Trust Board gave me first hand knowledge of the stresses on all our precious waterways.

My experience as a member of the Freight Network Group will enable me to bring valuable ideas for traffic management to the Mandurah area.

These experiences will enable me to understand and represent the needs of all residents and ratepayers.

councillor caroline Knight (North Ward)

Mandurah has been my home for 18 years. I’ve settled in the North Ward with my husband and two children.

I work part-time at Rockingham Hospital as a Medical Scientist.

My community involvement includes

  • Relay for Life (Cancer Council) Committee (2 years),
  • Peel Preservation Group committee (2 years),
  • Member of Mandurah’s Environmental Advisory Group,
  • Bushcare coordinator for Marlee Reserve,
  • Like many mums I have volunteered significant time at my children’s school

I’m passionate about the natural environment and it’s importance to Mandurah. My philosophy centres on sustainable growth and although the City is on the right track I feel that we can achieve better outcomes.

We need to invest more in our youth, provide for our seniors and give local businesses the support they need. I believe in our community and so seek your support.

Decisions made now leave their mark for generations to come.

councillor ron Wortley (North Ward)

Married to Cindy, with three sons, we have lived in the North Ward for 18 years.

My 17 years community work includes; Junior Sport, Community Policing, Coast Care, Water Rescue, Residents & Community Associations, Disability Access and Relay for Life.

I'm 51 years old, six years a City of Mandurah Councillor (2003 - 2007 & 2009 - 2011). I remain committed to representing your interests to council. I listen.

Together we will influence the future of our city, taking in the needs of the existing residents.

I'II ensure Council budgets for what we can afford, bringing you top value for your rates dollar.

We need to ensure policies are in place to reduce anti social behaviour and improve surveillance.

The preservation of our waterways and native bushland, improved traffic management and community facilities for our youth and the young at heart, are all priorities I will ensure are delivered.

councillor gary BROWN (TOWN WARD)

We have lived in Mandurah since 1990 when the population was 20,000.  Since then the population has grown to more than 65,000 and predicted to reach 130,000 by 2030. We now have a major challenge of increasing the capacity of our roads, sporting facilities and all the other requirements of a city without losing the character of Mandurah.

I have been you Councillor since 2001 and seek your support again so as I can continue to utilise the knowledge gained over that time. I am on the Rivers Regional Council, which is working on alternate ways of disposing of our rubbish, the Southern Regional Road Group, where our share of funding for roads come from, and many other community committees.

How we manage the growth of our city will be critical to the future of Mandurah and the ability to make the right decisions is the challenge.

councillor dave schumacher (TOWN WARD)

I have resided in Mandurah for the past 17 years. In that time, I raised two daughters as a single parent. As a resident and business man in Mandurah I am fully aware of the challenges and opportunities that exist within our community.

There are many issues that are of concern to me which I am passionate about. These include supporting local business to decrease our high unemployment rate, providing better infrastructure especially in our CBD, reducing hoon behavior on our streets and protecting our environment, to mention a few.

Giving back to the community is very important to me and I achieve this by being involved in sporting and several charity organisations including Mandurah City Soccer Club, Lord Taverners, the McLeod Family and Relay For Life.

My prime aim is to make Mandurah a more prosperous, enjoyable and safe place to live and work.

councillor marina Vergone (Town Ward)

I have enjoyed the Mandurah lifestyle and life-qualities with my husband Phil and three teenage sons since 1994, but I am very conscious that an expected population nearing 100,000 by 2021, pressure is on Council to plan and deliver infrastructure and services.

My broad business experience as an Accountant and a Company Director provide me with the necessary skills to deliver good governance and responsible decision making and be an effective condu it for ratepayers, residents and local, state and federal government.

I'm committed to improving:

local employment development, especially for youth who need more stimulating and sport activities to reduce social problems;

aged care and what is being put in place to ensure quality health care; and,

protection of our waterways for both their ecological and recreational qualities.

I am looking forward to serving you as a Councillor for the City of Mandurah and ask for your support.
