MANDURAH CITY STAFF TACKLE ACCESS ISSUES

29-04-2008
Over the last couple of months, more than 80 City of Mandurah staff members have experienced firsthand just some of the challenges faced every day by people in wheelchairs and with a visual impairment.

It was all part of Disability Awareness Training sessions funded by the WA Local Government Association and run by the Independent Living Centre of WA.

Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said the training was part of the City’s commitment to increasing staff knowledge and awareness of access issues.

“Importantly, the training sessions looked at ways to overcome these issues within the City’s operations,” Mayor Creevey said.

“Each session also included a guest speaker with a disability sharing their experiences with staff, increasing even further their understanding and awareness of issues people face in the Mandurah community.

“Our goal is to make the City’s information, services and facilities accessible to all our customers, whether or not they have a disability.”

The four sessions to date have focused on customer service and program development. A fifth session this month will focus on increasing staff knowledge of available products that aid disability access.
