FESTIVAL EXHIBITIONS STRETCH YOUR IMAGINATION

30-04-2008
The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre is the venue for a series of exhibitions promising to present the new, the exciting and the unusual at the Stretch Festival on the weekend of May 3 and 4.

City of Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said an exhibition of works by highly acclaimed artist, the late Guy Grey-Smith, at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre’s art gallery was the centrepiece of the exhibitions.

“The Guy Grey-Smith Exhibition, which is open from 10am to 4pm over the festival weekend, will showcase the woodcuts, serigraphs, etchings and paintings of an artist whose work is in collections the length and breadth of the country,” said Mayor Creevey.

“We are absolutely delighted that Guy’s daughter Susan, who is a Mandurah resident, is providing an insight into her father’s career at the gallery on Saturday April 26 at 2pm as part of a guest speaker series of talks.

“Her talk will provide a great lead-in to the following festival weekend which is guaranteed to stretch your experience of the arts.”

Also at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre over the weekend, there will be two great productions. ‘Rising High’ at 3pm on Saturday at the Fish Trap Theatre sees Mandurah’s next generation of young performers join with choreographers Tim Rodgers and Ray Buchanan to present a wonderful community project.

On Sunday at 3pm and 8pm, the Boardwalk Theatre features acrobats, aerial artists, comedy, dancing and circus acts by the Pulse Youth Performance Company in the stunning production ‘Elemental’. Book at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

Over the next week, two key players in the development of public art and landscaping for the new Perth Bunbury Highway will present a talk, giving guests ample time to think about the design for the new bridge. All are welcome to the talk by Alan Grist, Project Manager Landscape, Southern Gateway Alliance (SGA), and Anne Neil, Artist Team Leader, Public Art Program for the SGA, who will speak from 6pm to 7pm on Tuesday April 29 in the City of Mandurah’s Tuckey Room.

An exhibition on the Eastern Foreshore over the festival weekend will display work by some of WA’s finest artists, including Gary Aitken, Carol Nicolson, Celestin Hutchinson and Tish Oldham.

Meanwhile, down at the Falcon eLibrary and Community Centre and with the help of volunteers, international paper artist Graham Hay will soon be transforming thousands of donated books into a temporary sculptural installation for the Stretch Festival. Graham Hay will also be giving a public talk on his work at the library at 3.30pm on Friday May 2.

After the festival, the books used in “Brain Sell”, which were donated by the Save the Children Fund, the State Library and the City of Mandurah’s two libraries, will be sold off at the eLibrary with proceeds going to Save the Children Fund.
