MANDURAH RESIDENTS LIKE ‘LIVING SMART’

29-08-2008
The Living Smart 12-month pilot program launched in March 2008 has been embraced by Mandurah residents, judging by their response to the recent Great Gardens Workshop and Living Smart community course, both held in July as part of the program.

The Great Gardens Workshop, which attracted more than 100 attendees, covered gardening for sustainability and included advice on garden designs to minimise mechanical heating and cooling of the home.

The Living Smart community course gave in-depth advice on household sustainability and broad personal and community sustainability actions, and was so popular it was oversubscribed, but Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said people who missed out on either event could take heart.

“There are more free Great Gardens Workshops and Living Smart courses still in the pipeline,” Mayor Creevey said.

A Great Gardens Workshop is scheduled for 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Thursday November 6 at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre’s Fish Trap Theatre, while two seven-week Living Smart community courses will be held in 2009 from 7pm to 9pm at:

  • Falcon eLibrary and Community Centre, corner Flavia Street and Cobblers Road, Falcon, on Tuesdays from February 24 to April 7.
  • Sustainable Mandurah Home, 18 Grandmere Parade, Meadow Springs, on Wednesdays from May 6 to June 17.

To book for the Living Smart courses ring Alex Dunn on 9216 8741, email alex.dunn@dpi.wa.gov.au, or go to www.dpi.wa.gov.au/livingsmart for more about Living Smart.

“The really exciting news is that initial reports from households indicate participants are significantly changing their behaviour to adopt more sustainable practices around the home,” Mayor Creevey said.

“I congratulate those Mandurah residents who are using the Living Smart program to help them take positive action, from changing to waterwise shower heads to signing up for Greenpower.”

The roll-out of information and services will continue until June 2009, with initial indicators of gas, electric and water savings expected in September 2008.
