MOBILE PHONES DEMYSTIFIED FOR SENIORS

29-08-2008
Seniors who find mobile phones a bit of a challenge have a free, tailor-made program coming up for them on September 1 to celebrate the start of Adult Learner’s Week.

Mandurah City Senior Citizens Centre is partnering with Mandurah Catholic College through the School Volunteer Program to provide the Mobile Phone Muster, which will help seniors get the most out of their mobile phones.

Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said many seniors who had mobile phones had never been taught how to use them.

“Our Senior Citizens Centre has had a number of requests for lessons in using mobile phones,” Mayor Creevey said.

“So when the centre, along with community organisations Australia-wide, was awarded a grant to celebrate Adult Learner’s Week, it was the perfect opportunity to provide the training our seniors had asked for.  Another wonderful bonus is that this will help bridge the generation gap.”

Mandurah Catholic College students and Service Learning Coordinator Hayden Bandy have volunteered their time to teach seniors how to make a phone call, add contacts to their phones, text and other useful tips.

The Mobile Phone Muster is being held at the Mandurah Catholic College in Coodanup on Monday, September 1, and is fully booked.

Adult Learner’s Week, which this year runs from September 1-8, is an opportunity to celebrate, promote and advance all forms of adult learning.

It takes place internationally and has been held in Australia since 1995, with events supported by both State and Commonwealth Governments to encourage more people to get actively involved in learning.
