MANDURAH JOINS 'DOB IN A DUMPER' CAMPAIGN

11-02-2008
The City of Mandurah has teamed up with the Housing Industry Association for a six-month pilot program in Mandurah to stop illegal rubbish dumping on building sites.

The pilot, which began in January, is designed to encourage the community and building supervisors to report illegal dumping of rubbish on building sites and in skip bins on building sites.

Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said the six-month pilot was a direct outcome of the City’s Building Site Best Practice Workshop that was held in September 2007.

“The workshop brought together building managers and contractors, developers, real estate agents and City officers in a coordinated effort to improve site management during building projects in Mandurah,” Mayor Creevey said.

“One of the suggestions put forward by builders attending the workshop was for the City of Mandurah to take a lead role on the problem of illegal dumping by joining the “Dob in a Dumper” program run by the Housing Industry Association.

“The City followed through with this suggestion and in mid-December last year, the City of Mandurah joined the Cities of Wanneroo, Swan and Rockingham at the HIA’s ‘Dob in a Dumper’ launch in Perth.”

The HIA offers rewards for successful prosecutions of people who dump rubbish on building sites.  Anyone witnessing illegal dumping on a building site, or into a skip bin on a building site, within the City of Mandurah to report it to the ‘Dob in a Dumper’ hotline on 1300 2 REWARD (1300 2 739 287).

“The more information given the better, but people reporting illegal rubbish dumping on a building site should include car and/or trailer registration numbers, the date, time and place, and a description of the person or people dumping the rubbish,” Mayor Creevey said.

“Any other illegal rubbish dumping in bushland, on the coast or other places in the City should be reported to the City's Ranger Services on 9550 3630.
