DANGEROUS DOGS DESTROYED FOLLOWING ATTACK ON HORSE

20-02-2008
The City of Mandurah has destroyed two dogs that attacked and severely injured a pony in Parklands on January 20. The pony was later euthanased because its injuries were so severe.

Mandurah Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said the two dogs were seized by City Rangers the same day that they attacked the pony and had been impounded at the Council’s Pound since that time.

“The City has the authority under the Dog Act to destroy dogs that have caused severe injury or death to a person or animal,” Mr Newman said.

“The alleged owner of the two pit bulls, which were declared dangerous dogs in 2007 after they killed a cat, was given the opportunity to appeal a destruction notice served against him under Section 33G of the Dog Act 1976 but he did not.”

The City has taken action against the alleged owner of the dogs charging him with two offences of dog attack causing injury to an animal and two offences of wandering dogs under Section 33D and 33(1) of the Dog Act 1976.

The maximum penalties under the Dog Act are $10,000 for a dog attack [Section 33D] and $4000 for a wandering dog that has been declared dangerous [Section 33(1)].
