SEEKING MANDURAH SENIORS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES

Mandurah seniors are a treasure trove of memories, according to Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey, who is about to launch a new project designed to encourage seniors to share their stories with local children.

‘Tales from Times Past’ has been held in other communities with great success, but this is a first for the City of Mandurah which is launching the free project at 9.30am on Monday, February 4, at the Senior Citizens Centre in Ormsby Terrace.

“Our seniors have a wealth of stories about growing up in the earlier part of the last century, and the profound changes in the environment, technology and society since then, seen from a very personal perspective,” Mayor Creevey said.

“They can also provide our young people with a special insight into significant historical events, both local and worldwide, which they have actually lived through.”

Participants will first spend some time together and, with Project Coordinator Vasanti Sunderland’s help, learn how to tell their personal stories.

Later in the program, when they have developed their story-telling skills, they will visit local schools in groups, meet the children and share their stories.

Close links will be developed with the Mandurah Community Museum and Mandurah Historical Society during the project.

Seniors interested in finding out more are invited to attend the first meeting on Thursday, February 21, between 10.00am and 12.30pm at the Old Mandurah Yacht Club on the corner of Mary Street and Halls Head Parade. Morning tea will be provided.
