MANDURAH CLOSE TO MILESTONE IN WATER MANAGEMENT
Within this milestone framework, local governments look at improving water efficiency and water quality both in the community and in the City’s own operations and buildings.
Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said City staff had been pivotal to the success of the Water Campaign in reducing water consumption across all areas of the City’s operations.
“Staff behavioural and procedural changes have contributed to a per capita 14 per cent reduction in scheme water use and a 30 per cent reduction in groundwater use,” Mayor Creevey said.
“The City has been reducing water consumption through changes to its operational activities, including irrigation regimes, landscaping, planning and maintenance procedures.
Since joining in 2002, the City has implemented a number of initiatives which have helped reduce water consumption and improve the health of Mandurah’s internationally significant wetlands.
“The City has worked closely with the community to encourage water efficiency through education, promotion and incentive schemes,” Mayor Creevey said.
“These actions have contributed to a per capita domestic reduction of 20 per cent and an overall reduction of two per cent per capita. Water quality has also been addressed in the City’s operations and in the community through a number of major corporate and community actions that have been aimed at improving our internationally significant waterways.
“I am proud to say that the City’s achievements and partnerships with industry in water-sensitive urban design have made it a leader in the field and in the region.”
