CITY TAKES ON CCI RECOMMENDATIONS ON TRAFFIC ISSUES

23-06-2008
The City of Mandurah has started implementing changes to its recent City Centre traffic modifications to help relieve traffic congestion along Pinjarra Road between the Old Traffic Bridge and Sutton Street.

Eight recommendations were presented to Council on June 17 in response to a public meeting organised by the Peel Chamber of Commerce and Industry the night before.

Mandurah Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said that although there had not been much settling-in time for Stage 1 of the City Centre Traffic Modifications, the City appreciated the feedback from CBD business owners and the wider community at the public meeting.

“The PEEL CCI has presented us with a number of recommendations about the City Centre traffic modifications eight of which are being acted on by the City as soon as possible to help relieve the traffic congestion,” Mr Newman said.

“On advice from the community meeting, the City will implement a permanent clearway on Pinjarra Road between Mandurah Terrace and Sholl Street from 7am to 5.30pm seven days a week.

“The City will also bring forward Stage 2 of the City Centre traffic modifications by starting work on June 25 at the intersection of Sholl and Tuckey Streets to open up through traffic from Sholl on to Tuckey.  This will alleviate some of the congestion currently being experienced and will also rectify a long-held view that traffic should not be using the Woolworths car park as a throughway.”

Mr Newman said all CBD business owners were advised of the changes within the week following the public meeting and Council’s decision to act immediately on the recommendations including the Pinjarra Road permanent clearway.

Other recommendations include:

  • improving information and signage to the community on parking precincts, identification of parking stations and preferred access patterns to the CBD
  • vigilance by the City to ensure there is no illegal parking in the Pinjarra Road
  • clearway
  • active promotion of private parking station agreements with land owners within the CBD.
  • assurance that information on future traffic modifications is better communicated
  • investigating the possibility of a Foreshore Express stop located closer to the southern end of Mandurah Terrace.

Mr Newman said the City will also work with business owners in the City Centre to investigate promotional opportunities for the CBD that will help attract people to the Mandurah Terrace precinct.

Business owners at the public meeting aired their concerns that many people were staying away from the City Centre because they weren’t sure of the status of road works and parking arrangements in the CBD, so we will work with them through the Peel Chamber of Commerce and Industry to find ways of ensuring local people continue to visit the heart of the City.”
