STUDENTS SHOW CONCERN FOR ENVIRONMENT

09-05-2008
School students from Years 5 to 7 throughout the City of Mandurah gathered together on May 7 at the Billy Dower Youth Centre for a two-day Millennium Kids Sustainability Roadshow.

Supported by the City of Mandurah’s TravelSmart Officer, Danielle Berry, and Millennium Kids staff, the students became the Green Teams of their schools to guide other students through the program ‘TravelSmart to School’.

Roadshows are running right across the metropolitan area as part of the ‘TravelSmart to School’ program, with workshops focusing on what young people are doing in their communities to help the environment.

Students attending last week’s the Roadshow found out about climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developed ‘TravelSmart to School’ Sustainability Plans for their schools, undertook workshops, developed leadership and teamwork skills, watched and learned from DVDs and heard songs created by other primary school students.

Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey closed the proceedings with a talk to the participating students.

“I was very impressed with the young people who took part,” Mayor Creevey said.

“They so often attract negative publicity, yet here was a gathering of students whose sole focus was making a difference in the community.

“They showed a mature and responsible attitude that augurs well for our future. I congratulate every one of them.”
