TRAFFIC REVERSAL ON MANDURAH TERRACE DUE ON JUNE 4
Council endorsed implementation of the traffic modifications in the City Centre in February this year, with road works for Stage 1 beginning in early April and to conclude with the Mandurah Terrace traffic reversal next week.
In the lead-up to the reversal of traffic flow on Mandurah Terrace, final road works and installation of new signage will be taking place on Mandurah Terrace and Pinjarra Road overnight from 5.00pm on June 3 to 7.00am on June 4, circumstances and weather permitting.
To facilitate this work, road closures will be installed between Pinjarra Road and Tuckey Street on Mandurah Terrace and between Mary Street and Sholl Street on Pinjarra Road from 5.00pm on June 3 until the works are completed the following morning. Detour signage will also be installed.
Mandurah Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said access to emergency services and local residences within the boundaries of closed roads would be provided at all times.
“I urge all road users and pedestrians to take extra care by observing the road closures and detours and ask for everyone’s cooperation and patience during this time,” Mr Newman said.
Stage 1 works to maximise more efficient traffic flow in peak periods include:
- the removal of permanent on-street parking for motorists to off-peak parking and peak-hour clearways between Mandurah Terrace and Sholl Street
- the removal of on-street parking bays between Sholl and Sutton Streets
- the removal of the right-hand turn facility at 26 and 32 Pinjarra Road
- adjusting the traffic signal timing and phasing at the intersection of Sholl and Sutton Streets.
Mandurah Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said extensive consultation was conducted in September last year to seek input from businesses and the wider Mandurah community on ways to improve traffic circulation in the City Centre.
“Traffic congestion and snarls, especially during peak times and holiday periods, were being experienced regularly, and with our increasing population it was necessary to look at ways to improve peak-hour capacity and overall traffic flow,” Mr Newman said.
“There was a strong community response to the proposals to initiate traffic improvements in the CBD with most of our proposals receiving overwhelming support.”
At the heart of the proposals put to CBD businesses and the community were:
- The reversal of traffic flow from northbound to southbound on Mandurah Terrace between Tuckey Street and Pinjarra Road (Stage 1)
- Changes to parking arrangements on the north side of Pinjarra Road to improve peak hour traffic flow (Stage 1)
- Opening up Sholl Street to through traffic at the Tuckey Street intersection and creating a four-way intersection (Stage 2
