SENIOR CITIZENS CENTRE RENAMED AC-CENT MANDURAH
Mayor Paddi Creevey officially launched the new name at the 2008 Seniors Expo on Friday, October 31, as part of two days of celebrations in Mandurah for BankWest Seniors Week.
The name change signifies a revitalisation of the centre’s image to attract new members and volunteers, especially those aged between 55 and 65 years, and sustain quality programs now and into the future.
Mayor Creevey said the renaming of the centre was not just a first step, but rather a jump in a longer process that would reap many benefits for Ac-cent Mandurah members and the wider community.
“By renaming and rebranding the senior citizens centre to Ac-cent Mandurah, we want the centre to be the face of positive and active ageing in the wider community and true representatives of the ‘Seniors on the Go’ message,” Mayor Creevey said.
“The centre will still be fondly known as ‘Senior Citz’ and we will continue to ensure that it serves the current senior citizens of Mandurah and the Peel Region with the same quality activities and programs as it has always done.
“But Ac-cent Mandurah, which symbolises activity centre, active, central, and accent, gives us the opportunity to actively reinforce and support initiatives that enhance life-long learning, that motivate and create opportunities for paid and unpaid employment for active seniors, that encourage seniors to maintain and manage their health, and also provide support for other care providers and seniors groups.”
Mayor Creevey said the process of renaming the centre was very transparent with senior centre members submitting suggestions for a new name about 12 months ago and a selection panel formed to decide on the new name and provide guidelines on the new direction the centre might take in the future.
Two preferred names were selected and submitted to the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection for approval with Ac-cent Mandurah being the one that was registered.
New signage on the senior citizens centre and on the centre’s community bus will be installed over the next couple of weeks, while the centre newsletter will also receive a revamp in keeping with the new logo.
Ac-cent Mandurah staff will also be assessing recent survey results sent out with all our membership renewals that will assist in setting up new programs and activities to complement the centre’s existing program.
Mayor Creevey said she was delighted with the positive response the new name had received.
“I’m also extremely pleased at the energy around the centre that was so evident during the 2008 Seniors Expo and look forward to future activities outlined as part of the Mandurah Active Ageing Plan,” she said.
“These include enhancing the gardens surrounding the centre, refurbishing the centre’s lobby area using local artists, improving the existing services of the dining room, upgrading the services and management of the computer room and investigating opportunities to register the centre as a fully fledged training organisation.”
