LITTLE NIPPERS FESTIVAL ATTRACTED RECORD CROWD

Hot weather didn’t deter locals or those travelling from Perth and afar in attending the sixth annual Little Nippers Maawit Kara Children’s Festival which attracted about 15,000 people this year.

Dubbed by many visitors as the most successful Little Nippers Festival to date, the theme ‘Circus Fun’ certainly helped bring Mandurah’s eastern foreshore to life with heaps of exciting activities and free entertainment.

Mayor Paddi Creevey said the success of this year’s Little Nippers Festival would not have been possible with the support of numerous sponsors, such as Healthway, Lotterywest, Mirvac, Alcoa, the Peel Development Commission, Reading Cinemas, Terrace Art Framers and more than 30 volunteers from Curtin University of Technology and the Mandurah community.

“Thank you to all those who contributed and supported this event, your continued backing is valued enormously, especially the volunteers who continually put up their hands to help ensure this and other City events and festivals are successful,” Mayor Creevey said.

Held over one day instead of two this year, activities included were Scitech stage shows and educational displays, circus pony rides, amusements and train rides, and staged entertainment across two stages, including Bizircus, Chicks with Tricks and Captain Quirk.

Community groups participating as stallholders on the day also provided many arts, crafts and educational activities for children, and in the lead-up to the event, the Falcon eLibrary and Community Centre held free storytelling sessions and arts and crafts activities on Saturday, October 18.

Another highlight of the festival was the Peel Indigenous team versus Bunbury Clontarf Academy Football game held on the western foreshore.  The game attracted more than 250 people who supported the local team despite its loss against the visitors.

Plans are already underway for the 2009 Little Nippers Children’s Festival which will be based on the theme ‘Space Adventure’.
