CITY OF MANDURAH STAFF REALLY DO TRAVEL SMART

24-10-2008
On October 15, more than a dozen City of Mandurah staff enjoyed a healthy breakfast served on 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable plates, cutlery and cups to celebrate National Ride to Work Day and TravelSmart achievements.

Three teams met at various locations in Mandurah and enjoyed a ride to work and the breakfast plus they took advantage of free bike safety checks carried out by Mandurah’s BikeMan Kim Rigby.

The early morning event also celebrated the completion of the City’s new secure bike compound that will house staff-owned bikes and the City’s four fleet bikes, which are available to staff for travel to meetings and for lunchtime rides to help maintain fitness.

For the past two years, City of Mandurah staff have embraced the TravelSmart Program by using cars less and choosing alternatives such as walking, cycling, carpooling and public transport.

TravelSmart awards were also presented to Kerry Richards, Colin McQueen, John Smith and Adam Brown for their efforts to use alternative transport to and from work, and the staff winners of the LivingSmart Pedometer Challenge were also announced.

The City participates in the Living Smart Program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.

Acting CEO Allan Claydon said 54 City staff took part in the Living Smart Pedometer Challenge in September, which was a virtual walk to Denmark in WA.

“The distance to Denmark is about 500,000 steps and I can assure you competition for the Corporate Shield was fierce, with one team of two achieving 950,000 steps,” he said.

“Another team from a combined section in Planning clocked up three million steps closely followed by a team from Infrastructure Development.”

Both the TravelSmart and Living Smart programs provide a host of benefits for individuals, the community and the environment, from reduced pollution and greenhouse gas emissions through to improved health, personal security with more ‘eyes on the streets’ and a renewed sense of community.
