GET ON YOUR FEET FOR WALK WEEK
‘Walk Week – Walk There Today’, which is supported by the City of Mandurah and South Metropolitan Public Health Unit, is being held to tempt Peel residents to put their best feet forward for health, recreation, transport and the environment.
Mandurah Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said walking was an accessible and low cost way to be active.
“Most private car trips are of less than one kilometre which will generate more than 300kg of carbon dioxide,” Mr Newman said.
“That’s a distance that could easily be walked in about 10 minutes burning your own fuel at around 166 kilojoules.”
‘Come and Try’ days during Walk Week include:
- a Seniors Walk at Mariners Cove on Monday, November 3,
- a walk hosted by the Mandurah Walking Club on Wednesday, November 5 starting from the Mandurah Ocean Marina at 9.00am,
- Seniors Pole Walking in central Mandurah on Thursday, November 6,
- an invitation from the YAHOO Over 55 Bushwalking Club to try a real bushwalk and experience firsthand the forest and wildflowers in Dwellingup on Thursday, November 6.
“Many of us can find opportunities every day to walk short trips to public transport, work, school, the local park and shops, and participating in these community ‘Come and Try’ days during Walk Week is the perfect time to get started,” Mr Newman said.
Contacts for further information on the local walks are Lynn Frings from the Peel Branch of the Seniors Recreation Council on 9535 5342 for the two seniors events, Dee Gaebler on 9581 8421 for the walk on November 5, and Preston Suijdendrop on 9537 8209 for anyone wanting to go bushwalking.
