MANDURAH CITY’S 20 LOOS ARE FLUSH WITH RAINWATER

31-10-2008
The City of Mandurah has installed two 23,000 litre rainwater tanks at the Civic Centre to provide nearly all the water required for toilet flushing each year in four toilet blocks in the Civic Centre and Administration Centre buildings.

Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said the tanks had been installed recently to collect rainwater from the large roof space of the Civic Centre.

“The rainwater should save 322 kilolitres of water every year and almost totally replace scheme water for flushing,” Mayor Creevey said.

“It’s important Council leads by example when it comes to adopting water saving and other sustainable practices.

“By doing so, perhaps we can encourage residents and businesses to look at their own use of water and what steps they can take to make it more sustainable.”

Recent rain has meant the new system is now operating and is pumping harvested rainwater into the toilets.

The City secured more than $20,000 in funding for the project from the third and final round of the Commonwealth Government Community Water Grants, and contributed an additional $5000 for signage and promotion.

Solahart/Energy House, WA Plumbing and West Coast Poly were also involved in the project, which was one of the City’s water management actions in the ICLEI Water Campaign, along with other initiatives to reduce water consumption.
