| Living quietly amongst are some amazing trees that connect us to our past as well as provide homes for our birds and bugs. In summer their leafy arbours shade us from the sun’s rays and their large physical presence lends amazing form to our landscapes. This project celebrates Mandurah’s significant trees with words and art bringing artists and community members together to contemplate their many wonders. | Recycling is a concept foremost in our ecologically aware daily routines. Cleanaway Mandurah has partnered with Stretch to provide large recycled bales for artists to transform. This astounding installation is set to confront, intrigue and educate. | THE TRADEGY OF THE JAMES SERVICE 1-3 May | On 20th July 1878 the James Service got caught on the Murray Reef and all hands and passengers were lost. Bodies and artefacts were washed up on to Mandurah’s beaches for weeks after. This sculptural project, a partnership between Stretch, Gary Aitken and Curtin University, commemorates those that were lost on that day including a troupe of actors bound from India to Melbourne. DRAW WITH ME? PAINT WITH ME?
| Mandjar Artisans, roving the foreshore with easels, paint and drawing tools, will encourage visitors and residents to join them in creating paintings and drawings along the beautiful Mandurah foreshore. | SYMBIOTICA 6th SHORE | The project will engage with notions of geological time promoted by the presence of microbial thrombolites living in the lake. It forms an important habitat for the annual migration of waders and for decreasing populations of Hooded Plover. | For Stretch 2009 Mandjar Square will be transformed into ‘Festival Square’ – a vibrant and energetic hub for music, art, performance, installations, exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops and mixing with festival fans. | CHRIST’S CHURCH FESTIVAL 1-3 May | One of Mandurah’s earliest buildings and one of the first places people would come together as a community, Christ’s Church has been central to life in Mandurah for many years. | Church Fete, Guided Tours, Bell Ringing 2 May, afternoon | Spend the afternoon and early evening at Christ’s Church and enjoy learning about the history and cultural practices associated with this historic place of worship and community gatherings. | Commemorative Service in Honour of Yagurburt George Winjan 3 May, 4 pm | Yagurburt George Winjan was a witness to the massacre at Pinjarra. Despite the trauma of this event and the impact of Settlement this wise man accepted the inevitability of change to the arcadian lifestyle of the Nyoongar community and mediated between the two groups. This service will bring people together to commemorate Winjan and to encourage healing within our community. | The Life and Times of Peel – Tales from the Grave Dates and Times TBA | Written and directed by Sean Walsh this dramatic candlelit work to be performed in the churchyard at night will make the hairs on the back of your next stand up as you listen to the tales from the grave.
