Living quietly amongst are some amazing trees that connect us to our past as well as provide homes for our birds and bugs.  In summer their leafy arbours shade us from the sun’s rays and their large physical presence lends amazing form to our landscapes.  This project celebrates Mandurah’s significant trees with words and art bringing artists and community members together to contemplate their many wonders. THE TRADEGY OF THE JAMES SERVICE
1-3 May
On 20th July 1878 the James Service got caught on the Murray Reef and all hands and passengers were lost.  Bodies and artefacts were washed up on to Mandurah’s beaches for weeks after.  This sculptural project, a partnership between Stretch, Gary Aitken and Curtin University, commemorates those that were lost on that day including a troupe of actors bound from India to Melbourne.  This project is being documented by Town TV.

6th SHORE
The project will engage with notions of geological time promoted by the presence of microbial thrombolites living in the lake.  It forms an important habitat for the annual migration of waders and for decreasing populations of Hooded Plover.  What this project plans to do is to pull these issues together to critically interrogate the potential futures of the lake, to arrive at the sixth and final shore.   6th Shore aims to push the boundaries of what it means to go on a walk and think like an ecosystem!”Lake CliftonSymbioticA

Commemorative Service in Honour of Yagurburt George Winjan
3 May, 4 pm
Yagurburt George Winjan was a witness to the massacre at Pinjarra.  Despite the trauma of this event and the impact of Settlement this wise man accepted the inevitability of change to the arcadian lifestyle of the Nyoongar community and mediated between the two groups.  This service will bring people together to commemorate Winjan and to encourage healing within our community.  It will be followed by a traditional smoking ceremony at the plaque to commemorate this historic leader.Christ’s Church, Sholl StreetMayor Paddi Creevey
