Welcome 2012 with a bang!
POSTED ON 22 Dec 2011
+ Enlarge FLOCK to the foreshore for family-friendly fun and fabulous fireworks this New Year’s Eve – and start 2012 with a bang. The ever-popular annual Coastal Times Community Fireworks light up the sky at 9pm and again at midnight.
The no-alcohol, no-drugs event starts at 6pm on the Mandurah foreshore with live entertainment from Modern Mystery, followed by popular Perth band Felix from 7pm to 9pm and the All-Star Show Stoppers cabaret show seeing out the last few hours of the year.
Extra security has been provided, working on the eastern and western foreshores through the evening, and local police will be out in force.
Due to the popularity of the Sector X Youth Zone last year, the area has been doubled in size to include amusement-style arcade games, a DJ and dance floor, giving young people a place of their own to hang out.
“Local police have again complimented the City for providing this area as a way of helping to reduce anti-social behaviour,” Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said.
“Sector X is a safe area for young people where they can celebrate New Year’s Eve by playing games and enjoying their favourite music – and it’s completely free.”
Local artists are expected to develop an urban art board around the perimeter fencing of Sector X, highlighting messages about the effects of alcohol and smoking.
There will also be a silent disco within the rotunda.
“We’ve also got carnival rides and a range of food for sale to make sure New Year’s Eve 2011 is a fantastic night for all,” Mayor Creevey said.
“The event promises to be a great night for all ages to relax and welcome in 2012 in a safe and friendly environment.
“Having two fireworks shows means even the youngest revellers should happily head home early, confident they haven't missed out.
“A shuttle bus to and from the train station on the night will ensure Mandurah visitors don't have to worry about trying to find parking, which will be at premium judging from past events.
“City rangers would also like to remind dog owners to secure their dogs during the fireworks – the RSPCA has advice on how best to care for pets at http://tiny.cc/dogs-rspca.”
Mayor Creevey said she was looking forward to the New Year with a sense of optimism and enthusiasm.
“As the year starts afresh, we all have an opportunity to reflect back on the year gone by while also looking ahead,” she said.
“The future certainly looks bright for our City and we will continue to do our best to ensure Mandurah remains a special place to live, work and visit.
“On behalf of the City of Mandurah, I wish everyone in the community a happy, safe and prosperous New Year.”
