Get up close and personal with revolutionary works of art from this year’s Wearable Art Mandurahcompetition. This special exhibition runs from August 4 to September 3 and will be presented across two galleries; the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery and Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM).
Forty incredible, handmade garments were showcased during two Showcase performances on June 10 and 11, which were chosen from 114 entries as part of the 2017 Wearable Art Mandurah Competition.
More than 1300 people enjoyed the colourful spectacle of art on the body over the two shows, including one sell-out Showcase.
Seven winning garments will be showcased at the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery (located within the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre), while another five winners, plus a selection of other garments, will be showcased at CASM.
The exhibition, presented by Act-Belong-Commit, will include guest speakers, panel discussions and a workshop, and the opportunity to explore the garment’s techniques, materials, structure and form as well as reliving the showcase through projection, music and film. Information on the 2018 competition will also be available.
This year’s competition included international entries from Romania, Switzerland and New Zealand, and nationally from Alice Springs, Darwin, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland.
Mayor Marina Vergone said the exhibition is a second chance to witness the amazing garments for those who missed the Showcase.
“The Showcase was truly a feast for the senses and we’re excited to continue to showcase the creativity through the exhibition experience added to this year’s competition,” she said.
“I encourage those who missed out on the Showcase to visit the galleries and get up close and personal with the dynamics behind the garments and discover for themselves what all the excitement is about.”
The exhibition will be launched on August 4 at 6pm from CASM, with a walk through to the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery at 7pm.
