Creative young people will put their design talents on show this Saturday, March 24, at a special youth judging event for Wearable Art Mandurah.

Due to a high number of youth entrants for the 2018 competition, a new, separate youth judging event will be held at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre in the Fishtrap Theatre at 10am.

Sponsored by Bendigo Bank, the day will give more than 20 young designers the full experience of the main Wearable Art Mandurah judging event, including professional photography, hair and makeup.

It will be a live judging event, allowing the audience to see what usually happens behind closed doors.

Up and coming designer Isla Munro, who recently graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor in Fashion Design, is one of this year’s judges for the youth event.

Ms Munro entered the Wearable Art Mandurah competition in 2013 and 2015, and considered it an important experience towards nurturing her early creativity.

She has recently returned from two years studying and working in the fashion industries of Hong Kong, Jakarta, Shanghai and Paris, sponsored by the Australian Department of Trade and Foreign Affairs New Colombo Plan Scholarship. The former Frederick Irwin Anglican School student is now an ambassador for the scholarship, speaking at schools and inspiring students to become involved.

Ms Munro is now building her locally produced and designed womenswear label, Isla Munro, which focuses on delivering luxury women’s loungewear with an emphasis on modern design and versatility.

Throughout the Wearable Art Mandurah competition, entrants often put hundreds of hours of work into their creative pieces, and the young entrants are no different. The competition nurtures and encourages a wide range of artistic talents.

Those interested in attending the youth judging event this weekend, including teachers and friends of entrants, and those interested in taking part in the 2019 event, can contact the City on 9550 3271 or to register interest for VIP tickets.
