From 1 July 2019, the Mandurah Visitor Centre (MVC) will be operated by Mandurah and Peel Tourism Organisation (MAPTO).
The City of Mandurah Council voted in favour of transferring the service to the local tourism organisation at its meeting on Tuesday, 28 May, meaning MAPTO will be responsible for the operations of the centre. MAPTO staff will also become employees of the City of Mandurah in the new financial year.
MAPTO will continue to be governed by an independent board and will determine the tourism strategies for the region.
MAPTO acting CEO Anita Kane said she was confident the changes will lead to a better Visitor Centre experience for tourists and members alike.
“Absorbing the day to day operations of the Mandurah Visitor Centre into MAPTO means we can better use its assets to help boost tourism in the region,” Ms Kane said.
“We can direct resources to where they’re needed most and ensure the way the MVC functions aligns with our tourism strategies.
“It also means we can better use the building itself, which is in a prime location at the heart of the Mandurah foreshore precinct, to attract visitors and promote the region in line with marketing campaigns and events that we may be running.”
The changes follow last year’s Council Notice of Motion to devote the expertise and resources of MAPTO to focus on growing Mandurah’s tourism sector, and MAPTO’s physical relocation to the Mandurah Visitor Centre.
Mayor Rhys Williams said the City was excited to welcome MAPTO staff as City of Mandurah employees, and to transfer the operation of the MVC.
“It makes perfect sense for the tourism experts in our region to control the operations of the Visitor Centre,” Mayor Williams said.
“Having MAPTO and its staff as an official part of our organisation will mean improved collaboration with all areas of City of Mandurah operations that have a natural synergy with and an impact on tourism.”
Ms Kane said existing Mandurah Visitor Centre members will be offered a complementary 6-month interim membership renewal while the operations of the centre are reviewed.
A prospectus for membership renewals and new members will be offered in the new year.
