Local young people are now able to try their hand at a range of sports and healthy activities in the new Friday Night Skillz after school program.
Funded by the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and supported by Healthway, Friday Night Skillz aims to increase participation in sport and active recreation for young people aged eight to 18 years.
The free program kicked off last week, and is held on Friday afternoons from 4-6pm during school terms at Lakelands oval, near Coastal Lakes College.
Young people are able to try a range of different sports across the term including football, touch rugby and cricket, all held in a safe environment with City of Mandurah youth officers, sporting and community partners, and support from local Indigenous services.
Free transport is provided to and from the Lakelands oval, leaving at 3.30pm from the Billy Dower Youth Centre, and a healthy dinner will be provided.
Mayor Rhys Williams encouraged young people to get involved in the program and find a sport or activity that was right for them.
“This is the perfect opportunity to have a go at a sport or activity you might have wanted to try for some time, so come and try it for free while having fun with your friends,” Mayor Williams said.
“We're thankful to the State Government for providing funding for this program through the Targeted Participation Program Fund, and we're excited to be working with all our partners to hopefully encourage more young people to join sporting clubs.”
Friday Night Skillz is also supported by GP Down South, Department of Communities and sporting organisations, clubs and associations.
The State Government, through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Healthway is a major supporter of the City of Mandurah's Friday Night Skillz program in Western Australia. Sport and recreation builds stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities.
