Stretch Festival

As we head towards the cooler weather of autumn, the annual arts festival Stretch – does just that by 'stretching’ our experience of the arts with an eclectic program of performances, workshops, exhibitions and installations.  Held over the first weekend of every May the festival program provides an opportunity for the community to explore issues, tell stories and celebrate all that is good about living in Mandurah. .

Pulse Productions, Mandurah’s youth performance group

Professional artists, local groups, schools and the wider community contribute to the festival’s program with many events taking place outdoors on the Eastern Foreshore and in Mandjar Square as well as at a range of indoor venues including the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre

Since its launch in 2002, Stretch has been growing steadily its reputation for innovation, good art and community involvement.  It gives local artists the chance to show their work and it has spawned a number of local performing arts groups.  Stretch also provides less visible members of our community the opportunity to participate as community artists in a professional environment.

The festival’s spirit and intent is captured by the quirky Stretch man logo designed by celebrated Mandurah artist Coral Lowry.  It is used in a variety of ways each year to promote the event.  In this image the large 3d construction of the Stretch man was made for the 2005 festival.  The papier mache sculpture was built by clients of Community First Inc – a non-profit organisation that provides skills development for people with a range of abilities.

The City thanks the community and supporters as well as the festival’s regular sponsors:  The Health Promotion Foundation of WA, Community Arts Network WA and the Department for Information Technology, Communication and the Arts through its Festivals Australia program for their help in presenting this great festival.
