Enhancing community wellbeing through creative programs

Creative outlets can provide social benefits and valuable connections, and the City of Mandurah is dedicated to providing artistic programs that enhance our community’s health.

Our Creative Wellbeing Projects aim to improve the wellbeing of targeted demographic groups, to maintain and recover good health through cultural participation and engagement.

Over the next three years, the City will partner with experienced facilitators and community organisations to plan and deliver meaningful initiatives, focusing on select targeted demographics.

The Creative Age

The Creative Age is a creative wellbeing initiative presented by the City of Mandurah and produced by Community Arts Network (CAN). Designed for seniors living in aged care, the project combines storytelling and visual art to nurture creativity, strengthen social connection, and improve emotional wellbeing.

As Australia’s population ages, the need for inclusive, meaningful programs that address isolation and support mental health is growing. The Creative Age responds by offering safe, welcoming spaces where older people can reflect on their lives, express themselves, and connect with others.

Through a series of hands-on workshops, participants explore personal themes such as memory, culture, family, food, and identity. Using collage, they create unique placemats that tell their stories—artworks rich in history, humour, resilience, and cultural heritage.

These sessions go far beyond art-making. They promote confidence, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose, while helping residents feel seen, heard, and valued. After the workshops, CAN continues gathering reflections and stories—building a growing archive that honours the diverse experiences of older people in Mandurah.

The Creative Age is a powerful reminder that creativity, connection, and wellbeing have no age limit—and that every story matters.
