Upgraded hockey surface boosts community sport and shared-use facilities in Mandurah
Mandurah’s sporting community is set to benefit from a major facility upgrade, with a new synthetic hybrid playing surface at Mandurah Hockey Stadium now ready for the upcoming season.
The upgraded surface replaces the stadium’s ageing pitch, which was more than 18 years old and had reached the end of its serviceable life. Built to modern standards, the new surface delivers improved safety, performance and durability for players, while supporting shared use by other compatible sports.
City of Mandurah Mayor Amber Kearns said the project was an important investment in local sport and community participation.
"Upgrading our hockey green isn’t just about a better surface, it’s about creating safer conditions, supporting our clubs and volunteers and making sure locals have every opportunity to play, grow and stay connected to our community,” she said.
The new surface strengthens opportunities for junior and senior hockey participation across the Peel region, providing a high-quality home venue for the Peel Hockey Association’s more than 400 members ahead of the 2026 season.
Mayor Kearns said the upgrade also reflects the City’s focus on maximising the value of community infrastructure.
“While hockey will always be the main user of the stadium, we’ve designed this upgrade so the whole community can get value from it. Shared use by compatible sports means more people, more activity and more opportunities on the same piece of ground,” she said.
A spokesperson for the Peel Hockey Association welcomed the completion of the upgraded surface ahead of the new season, highlighting its importance for the local hockey community.
“This upgrade is a major step forward for hockey in the Peel region. The new surface provides a fantastic home base for our clubs, enhances the playing experience for athletes at every level, and sets a strong foundation for continued participation and growth in hockey across all age groups,” the spokesperson said.
The project was delivered through a strong partnership model, led by a significant investment from the City of Mandurah, with support from the WA Government and Peel Hockey Association. This project is part of the WA Government’s PlayOn WA, an exciting initiative to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by 2030.
