A day at the beach is a favourite pastime, but the ocean's waves can be quite unpredictable.
That's why our local lifeguards rely on the red and yellow flags to mark out the designated safe swimming areas.

When heading to one of our stunning local beaches this summer, always ensure that you swim between the red & yellow flags at patrolled beaches, read the safety signs and swim with a friend.

BEN stands for Beach Emergency Number.

The BEN system is a unique coding system designed to improve emergency response times by installing signs with unique numbers at beach access points.

Each BEN sign has a unique code based on an area prefix followed by a one-to-four-digit number.

This code is linked to the coordinates for the location of the sign. The official location name (if there is one), the address, suburb and nearest intersection are also on each sign.

While shark encounters are rare, you can minimise the likelihood of encountering sharks by checking SLSWA Twitter, the SharkSmart website, or news updates for alerts and shark activity before entering the water, swimming between the flags at patrolled beaches, staying close to the shore, and avoiding aquatic activities during dawn and dusk when sharks are more active.
