An exciting new opportunity for young local artists is now available through Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM).

Emerging creatives will have the chance to be part of the headspace youth artist residency program, enabling young artists to develop their practice in a professional studio space inside the CASM gallery.

Sponsored by headspace Mandurah and the City of Mandurah, the program was developed to coincide with Masterpieces, Mandurah’s premier art competition and exhibition for artists aged 13-25.

With applications for the program closing this Friday (March 6), the residency is available to artists aged 16 -25 years, with the successful applicant enjoying a three-month residency (March-June) in the studio space. Applications are open to visual, literary and multimedia artists.

headspace Mandurah is a counselling and support service for people aged 12-25 years. The organisation acknowledges the benefits of being creative in many different ways, and recognises that creativity helps young people to express themselves and assist with mental health experiences.

The studio residency package is valued at over $400. It includes mentoring opportunities with established local artists, the opportunity to engage with individual support through Headspace, and inclusion in a collaborative group exhibition in 2021 with 2020 CASM studio artists Jane Whelan, Amy Henderson and Trev Blyth.

Mayor Rhys Williams said the studio residency was a fantastic opportunity for young artists within the local community to have a real gallery experience.

“We are lucky to have many talented, motivated and creative young people in our area, and this new program will help to foster and support their artistic creativity,” he said.

“The successful applicant will get a professional gallery studio experience, as well as support and mentoring from reputable local artists, so I’d encourage anyone interested to apply.
