Protecting you and your Family

Mosquitoes are part of our natural environment and a getting totally rid of them is not possible. It is essential people know the risk and take protective action.

A number of species in the region are carriers of mosquito borne diseases.
Cases of Ross River and Barmah Forrest are monitored with low mosquito numbers not an indication of low virus cases.
Not every mosquito is a carrier however it only takes one bite.

How to protect yourself:

  • Reduce outdoor activity during high mosquito periods
  • Cover up – light coloured long sleeves and pants
  • Apply personal insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin if possible
  • Ensure fly screens are maintained
  • Check your property for potential breeding sites
  • Build outdoor entertaining areas to be mosquito proof
  • Speak to your local pest control company or hardware store about products that can reduce numbers around your property.

The City puts out community alerts when there’s increases in mosquito numbers through local newspapers, radio and email.
