City’s largest solar energy system to be installed at MARC

The Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) is the next City of Mandurah building to benefit from the installation of a solar energy system.

The installation at the MARC, the largest undertaken by the City, is the next phase of the City’s Solar Plan roll out which is reaping financial and environmental benefits.

Council agreed this week to increase the size from a 100 kW photovoltaic (PV) system to a 200 kW PV system. The installation of the 200 kW PV system at the MARC will cost up to $375,000 and is
anticipated to produce the following benefits:

  • annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 243 tonnes of CO2-e
  • annual cost saving of approximately $73,000
  • an estimated return on investment of 3.9 years
  • net financial gain of $1,678,825 over the life of the system due to the creation of tradable certificates under the federal Renewable Energy Target and electricity savings.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said the roll out of the next phase of the City’s Solar Plan is great example of the City’s dedication to saving energy and helping to conserve the environment.

“Our community has told us that the environment is one of their top priorities, and we are committed to taking action to decrease our impact on the environment in a number of different ways,” he said.

“The installation of this solar system at the MARC is the largest that the City has undertaken and will play an important part in the overall decrease in energy consumption, greenhouse gases and operating costs.

“The City has prioritised the investment into solar energy and this, combined with other improvements to City buildings over recent years, is significantly contributing to meet the City’s 2020 Carbon Neutral targets.”

The City’s Solar Plan has reduced the City’s greenhouse gas emissions by just under 10 percent.

The City’s overall solar energy system is reaching a total 373kW capacity, cutting annual operating costs by $183,790, electricity consumption by more than 500,000kWh and saving more than 540 tonnes of CO2-e from being released into the atmosphere.

A number of renewable energy projects have been introduced by the City in recent years, which have helped reduce the City’s carbon footprint emissions and to meet its 2020 Carbon Neutral targets.

The City has a long history of providing leadership within the community and driving action on climate change. In 1999, Council joined the Cities for Climate Protection Program and in 2011 adopted the Corporate Emissions Reduction Strategy (CERS) as part of our ongoing commitment towards a sustainable future.
