About the Event

Sciteam is coming to Lakelands Library for this year’s National Science Week!

Join Dr Claire Pannell for this special National Science Week workshop which includes demonstrations and activities in building your very own anemometer.

To determine if a site is suitable to install a wind turbine, scientists need to measure the wind speed using an anemometer.

WA is home to several wind farms. Wind power is the cheapest type of renewable energy. The blades (like a windmill) on a turbine harness the natural power of wind. These blades are connected to a hub, which links to a generator and as the wind blows, the energy on the blades drives the generator.

Perth is officially the third windiest capital in the world, after Wellington in New Zealand and Chicago in the United States, so there’s great potential for wind energy here in WA.

We will be making our own anemometer to test in the library lab and take home.
