Model wears Wearable Art garment on stage

'Reflected in Vincent's Eyes' by Jordan Pescud, winner of the Youth 13-18 award

Audiences were wowed with a feast for the senses during the Wearable Art Mandurah Showcase events on October 15 and 16, where close to 40 handcrafted garments took centrestage at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

The incredible handcrafted pieces were professionally modelled and put on full display during the theatrical performances, highlighting the skills, dedication and creativity of local, national and international designers behind the creations.

These garments had been lovingly crafted over the course of the year-long Wearable Art Mandurah competition, and were made from a huge variety of materials – from traditional fabrics to books, packing foam, surgical masks and teabag tags. The Showcase wove together dance, music, modelling and film to present each garment in its glory, in a spectacular performance directed by Helen Duncan.

Saturday’s event also included the Designer Awards, where winners were announced across the categories of Paper, Avant Garde, Tertiary, Youth and the special conceptual category – Elemental. There were also special prizes awarded, including Artist of the Year and Creative Reuse.

Saturday also saw the launch of the In the Fold exhibition at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre’s Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery, an exhibition of six incredible garments from this year’s Paper category. With the garments made from 90 percent paper, the exhibition is an exciting opportunity for the public to get up close to the amazing artworks and learn more about the way they have been created. In the Fold will be on show until Friday, November 18, with gallery opening hours Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm.
