2023 Mandurah Junior Council with MPs Andrew Hastie and David Templeman, Mayor Rhys Williams, Councillors and staff in the Council Chambers

The Mandurah Junior Councillors have had a busy few months on their leadership journey including a taste of life in government, setting a focus project for the year and presenting to the Mandurah Council.

The Mandurah Junior Council consists of 42 year six students from the 21 primary schools across Mandurah, providing young councillors with a unique opportunity to learn about local government and voice their opinions on things that matter to them.

First established in 1985, the Junior Council enables young people to have a voice in their community and to learn about local government.

The Junior Council collectively decided to put the focus of their annual project on discouraging vaping among young people.

At the May Council Meeting, Junior Mayor Joseva Ganilau and Deputy Junior Mayor Chloe Ferrari made a statement to Council about their annual project, outlining their focus and how they plan to hold an event on the Mandurah foreshore and create a song to educate young people on the harms of vaping.

Last month, the Junior Council had the opportunity to learn about the three tiers of government with guest speakers including Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie, Member for Mandurah David Templeman, Member for Dawesville Lisa Munday and Mayor Rhys Williams.

Mr Hastie, Mr Templeman, Mrs Munday and Mayor Williams gave passionate speeches to the junior councillors about their journey into politics, the highlights and challenges they have faced along the way, and the roles of Federal, State and Local governments.

Mandurah’s young people are an important part of the community, and Junior Council is one of the ways the City of Mandurah helps to build the skills and capacity of our young people.
