Work on the Southern Beaches Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) is progressing, with Stage 1 of Community Consultation now complete.

The CHRMAP is a long-term 100-year plan designed to address the impact of coastal erosion, sea level rise, and flooding on our coastline and nearby infrastructure. By identifying potential solutions now, the City can proactively manage these challenges and protect what we value most about our southern beaches.

During the first stage of consultation, the community shared their thoughts on the importance of our coastal assets and values. This included opportunities for residents to participate through a short survey, an online mapping tool, and joining the Coastal Community Reference Group (CCRG).

Key findings from this stage reveal that our community treasures:

  • the natural environment of the coastline
  • visiting beaches regularly and enjoying activities such as surfing, swimming, watching the sunset, fishing and walking
  • having sandy beaches
  • the accessibility of specific beaches
  • protecting culturally sensitive areas, such as the Seascapes caves
  • the low key, family-friendly nature of the southern beaches.
