Wirambi Landcare is once again leading the charge in the annual Citizen Science Tally of the Western Ringtail Possum. Now in its seventh year of coordination (and ninth overall), this vital project is conducted in partnership with Geoff Barrett from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), with support from the City of Mandurah and Landcare SJ. The data collected will be submitted to the State DBCA Ringtail database through Wirambi Landcare, helping to shape conservation efforts for this critically endangered species.

Why You Should Participate

  • Help Save a Critically Endangered Species – The Western Ringtail Possum is facing serious population declines, particularly in areas like Dawesville and Bouvard.
  • Survey from the Comfort of Home – You don’t need to venture far to contribute. Observations from backyards, parks, and local reserves all make a difference.
  • Make an Impact – Data collected is essential for understanding population trends, informing planning decisions, and guiding conservation projects.
  • More Participants Needed – There are growing concerns about populations in Herron and Lake Clifton. More surveyors in these areas will help determine if the decline extends further south.
  • A Fun and Educational Activity – This is a great way to connect with nature while spending quality time with family and friends.

How to Get Involved

The official tally runs from April 6th to May 4th, during which participants can record and submit their sightings. If you're unable to participate during this period, you can still contribute by submitting opportunistic sightings at any time through iNaturalist:
