Native Plants

As a Gold Waterwise Council for nine years, and Platinum Waterwise Council awarded last year and previously in 2017, sustainable water practices have been our focus for many years across our facilities and community spaces.

The City is also committed to delivering programs that benefit our community and environment, like our Waterwise Verge Program.

The City of Mandurah is excited to invite local residents to participate in this year’s Waterwise Verge Program, supported by the Water Corporation. This initiative aims to help residents transform their verges into beautiful, water-efficient gardens that save water, money, and time.

Over 700 households have participated since the program began, receiving free plants, tools, mulch, and expert advice to create wildlife-friendly gardens.

Why participate? By joining the Waterwise Verge Program, you can save up to 20,000-40,000 litres of water per year! The program is designed to take advantage of winter rains, giving your new plants the best chance to establish without additional watering. Plus, you'll be contributing to a cooler, greener, and more sustainable local environment.

What's included? Participants will receive:

  • Approximately 20 native plants
  • Garden trowel and gloves
  • Voucher for soil wetter or soil amendment
  • Pack of seeds
  • Mulch for your verge (delivered, but not spread)
  • Workshops to learn how to transform your verge

How to get started – To be eligible, residents must:

  • Provide 'before' and ‘after’ photos of their verge transformation
  • Prepare the verge by removing existing grass and installing any necessary irrigation
  • Spread the provided mulch and plant the supplied seedlings and seeds
  • Maintain the verge according to the City's Verge Development Guidelines
