Works to repair the boardwalk at Warrungup Spring Reserve in Dawesville have begun.

The project includes replacing and reinforcing the boardwalk’s timber decking and extending the concrete footpath to provide safer access to the site. The existing supporting pillars of the boardwalk will remain in place, after they were found to be structurally sound.

Warrungup Spring Reserve is a significant Aboriginal cultural site, and the City of Mandurah project team has partnered with Aboriginal corporation Gnaala Karla Booja (GKB) to ensure any cultural heritage is protected and preserved.

As such, Gnaala Karla Booja and Traditional Owners will provide monitoring services during all ground-disturbing activities. Monitoring plays a key role in respecting the significance of the site during the works.

The City was granted approval to carry out the works from Gnaala Karla Booja and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.

Public consultation for the boardwalk replacement was held in May 2023, with a common theme being the community’s desire to keep the boardwalk in its current shape.

This feedback has been included in the scope of works, with the geometry, size and location of the boardwalk remaining the same.

The timeline for the works includes:

  • Preliminary works begin: Week of 21 April
  • Footpath extension: May 2025
  • Boardwalk repairs completed: July 2025
